For those that don’t know me, I’m part Colombian through my mother’s side. Which means my baby bottles were filled with coffee with a splash of formula. Colombians know their coffee…
Any time I go home to visit, my mom asks two questions – “You hungry?” (always!) and “You want some coffee?”. Goes without saying that I love a good cup of coffee. But I’m not the only one. According to one study, 64% of Americans drink at least 1 cup of coffee a day. For many, coffee is the only way to get through the day. Thanks to the caffeine kick each cup packs. But coffee is so much more than an energy boost. Lets talk about the benefits of coffee.
When it comes to being fit & healthy, have a strong heart is as important as it gets.
A study done by the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) and Harvard School of Public Health showed that drinking two 8-ounce cups of coffee a day could help protect against heart failures. And drinking 4 cups a day? 11% lower risk of heart failure. So drink up buttercup.
When blood glucose levels get out of whack, that is normally a precursor to Diabetes. Coffee can help you lower your blood glucose levels. This is done over a long term process because in the short term, coffee can actually increase blood glucose. Studies have shown that each daily cup of coffee you consume may reduce this risk by 4–8%
So next time you think “I’m going to take a break from coffee”… Think again!
This is mainly due to that caffeine we spoke about earlier. It’s an incredible substance and one that is highly studied.
Caffeine is a catalyst to our body releasing Epinephrine (Adrenaline). This is normally called the “fight or flight” hormone and when we’re in situations of extreme stress – this becomes a huge ally. Well… weightlifting is normally a situation of extreme stress (if you’re pushing yourself).
It has been shown that caffeine can improve physical performance by 11-12%. I don’t know about you, but if I can perform 11-12% better in the gym, then I know I’m on my way to beautiful new gains.
Bye, Bye Fat
When bulking season goes a little too long or we go too hard, we’re left with a spare tire we want to shed immediately. Coffee can help us get there.
You ever take a fat burner supplement? Without a doubt, 9 out of 10 will have caffeine in it. As far as natural supplements go, caffeine is one of the few that has actually been proven to burn fat. Burn baby, burn!
A nice cup of coffee (normally 150mg of caffeine) can help raise your metabolic rate anywhere from 3 – 11%. At the rate I eat (aka donuts), I feel like i should be drinking at least 8 cups of coffee with metabolic gains like that (I won’t tho, don’t worry).
I like living. I’m sure you do. This one was a big eye opener for me.
It was a pretty great article from CNN, you should take the time to read it in full.
But the cliff notes version is… That morning and afternoon cup of coffee could have up to an 18% effect in lowering the risk of death compared to people who did not drink coffee.
The studies dove into many facets in which coffee lends a strong hand to. Coffee has certain compounds that are neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory. It can help lower inflammation, help you carry healthier lipid profiles and better glucose levels (we spoke about this one). All of these positive effects in the end greatly affect mortality rates.
“Umm, yes Starbucks Barista, grand dark roast with a quad shot of espresso. I’m trying to live… for a long time.”
For those of you that hate coffee, I would urge you to give it a chance. Practice. I’m even ok with you buying some of those amazing new creamers from Coffee-mate. For those of you that love coffee, keep loving it. Because coffee loves you back.
