Everyone Wants the D – Vitamin D Benefits

If you live in the Northeast, winter’s get old reallllll fast. It’s just always cold enough to be annoying and you feel like there isn’t a drop of sun to be found. We spend most of our days trapped inside our homes staying warm. We dream of warmer days or plan vacations to escape. We have to dig a little bit deeper to just be civil with other humans. But if you can think back to February 20 and 21, we saw temperatures of 65 and 77 respectively. We got the D! And we felt alive. Cities were buzzing. And it just shows that winters are small obstacles keeping us from absorbing the crucial Vitamin D Benefits

Winters, for the most part, correlate to diminished exposure from the sun. That, in turn, keeps us from a crucial vitamin that has a massive impact to our overall well being. Vitamin D. It’s literally known as the sunshine vitamin as our body produces it from exposure from the sun. Without sun, we obviously need to find other forms to take in some Vitamin D benefits. But most of us neglect it, overlook it or take it for granted.

Lets dive into the Vitamin D benefits …

The cold fcking sucks. And if you love it then honestly we probably cannot be besties. Personally, I wake up at 4:30am during the week to hit the gym. When the car reads 20 degrees or below, it makes life incredibly not fun. The simple task of leaving your home to walk 5 minutes to your car can change your mood drastically.

The term “hello sunshine” is a term of endearment. Well, when you’re severely lacking in Vitamin D aka the “sunshine vitamin.” chances are you’re not getting that compliment (maybe extreme, I’m sure you’re all happy positive people, but you get the point).

There are numerous studies that have shown the correlation between Vitamin D intake and depression. The impact that sunshine or Vitamin D can have on our emotional and mental well-being is massive. Here’s another study.

Next time you’re feeling a little off, doesn’t hurt to pop a little Vitamin D or head outside & soak up some sun.

Cancer & Other Bad Stuff

It’s simply funny to think how powerful the D is. Our well-being relies more on it than we think. Perhaps the most vital are regulating the absorption of calcium and phosphorus, and facilitating normal immune system function. The Vitamin D benefits are strong!

The flu! Lets face it, this was a rough year for the flu. There were 1 or 2 states that declared epidemics I believe (I could be wrong though). It seems to evolve every year and new strains continue to pop up. Give it the D!!! Studies show that improving Vitamin D supplementation can have a positive outcome on the flu.

Cancer… Fck Cancer! Give it the D! Vitamin D is extremely important for regulating cell growth and for cell-to-cell communication. Some studies have suggested that calcitriol (the hormonally active form of vitamin D) can reduce cancer progression by slowing the growth and development of new blood vessels in cancerous tissue, increasing cancer cell death, and reducing cell proliferation and metastases. Pretty powerful stuff!

Weight Loss

Now we’re talking, huh?! I think that “Winter Bulks” should now be re-classified as “Vitamin D Deficiency Cycle.” Jk, JK…. all about dem gains bruh.

There is a ton of evidence floating around the Interwebs that show how Vitamin D supplementation can aid in weight loss. One study showed that individuals taking Vitamin D lost more weight as it helped suppress appetite. Studies also show that individuals with a higher body mass index and body fat percentage tend to have lower blood levels of vitamin D. Interesante…

So there you have it people. Soak in that sun when you can (protect your skin tho). Or add in some Vitamin D supps when the sun is scarce. As “Getting the D” can have some pretty immense benefits to your every day life.
